Austin Air vs. Airpura: Which One Fits Your Home?
If you're choosing between Austin Air and Airpura, you're already looking at two of the heavy-duty options for odors, smoke and chemicals. Both are built around a lot of carbon, so the choice comes down to fit rather than quality.
Shoppers weighing the two tend to ask the same few questions: how long the filters really last, which one handles smells best, and whether a sensitive nose will tolerate the carbon itself.
Austin Air is known for keeping things simple, with one all-in-one filter that lasts up to five years and a three-speed dial. Airpura is known for range: an everyday model, models built for specific problems, and more than 400 carbon blends for harder cases.
Neither brand comes out ahead on all three. The right pick depends on what's in your air and how much upkeep you want, so here's how they compare.

- Separate models for specific problems, like tobacco smoke, formaldehyde, wildfire smoke and chemical sensitivity, each with its own carbon mix
- Carbon, HEPA and prefilter replaced separately
- Treated-carbon and 99.99% HEPA upgrades

Built for Your Problem
Austin Air keeps the choice short: pick a size, then pick the standard filter or the Plus filter, which adds treated carbon for chemicals and smoke. Airpura offers an everyday line, the R series, plus specialized models for problems like tobacco smoke, formaldehyde and heavy chemical odors, each in more than one size.
| Main concern | Austin Air | Airpura |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday dust, pollen, pets | HealthMate | R600 |
| Wildfire smoke and VOCs | HealthMate Plus | V600 |
| Known formaldehyde source | HealthMate Plus | F600 |
| Heavy chemical odors | HealthMate Plus | C600 (26 lbs carbon) |
| Tobacco or cannabis smoke | T600 DLX (tar prefilter) | |
| Small rooms | HealthMate Jr | R400 |

What the Carbon Does
The HEPA filter catches particles like dust, pollen and pet dander. Odors, smoke smells and chemical fumes are gases, so they slip through HEPA; the activated carbon is what traps them.
Carbon and media weight (lbs) and thickness
Manufacturer specs. *Austin Air's 15 lbs is a blend of carbon and zeolite, a mineral that also traps gases.
Potassium Iodide or Potassium Permanganate?
Both are added to activated carbon so it catches gases that plain carbon holds poorly. They work differently, which is why each brand puts them in different models.
Potassium iodide speeds up how quickly the carbon binds chemicals. It's in every HealthMate Plus filter, aimed at VOCs like formaldehyde and benzene, and it's the standard carbon in Airpura's V600.
Potassium permanganate is an oxidizer: instead of only holding certain gases, it breaks them down. That includes formaldehyde and sulfur gases like hydrogen sulfide, the rotten-egg smell. It's the standard carbon in the F600 and an option on the V600.
Both brands use potassium iodide in their wildfire and VOC models. For a known formaldehyde source, Airpura builds its dedicated model around permanganate. Not sure which fits your problem? Ask before you buy.
What Owning Each One Looks Like
What You Replace, and When
Austin Air. One main filter, replaced at up to five years. In between, vacuum the outer screen once a month.
Airpura. Prefilter every year, carbon every two years, HEPA every three. Each part is replaced on its own, so if odors come back you swap just the carbon and keep the HEPA.
Manufacturer specs: replacement schedules for normal home use. Pets, smoking, heavy smoke or new carpet shorten both.
Warranty
Austin Air. Motor and fan coverage. The filter warranty is a prorated discount on a replacement, shrinking each year.
Airpura. Parts and labor for five years, then labor only through year ten, with parts and shipping paid by the owner. Filters aren't covered, and opening the unit beyond the filter chamber voids it.

Other Matchups
Strong Chemical Smells: HealthMate Plus or C600
When chemical fumes are the main problem, the C600 carries 26 lbs of carbon, more than any other model in this comparison except the T600 DLX. It trades some fine-particle filtering for that extra carbon, so it's the better match for fumes than for dust or pollen.
If you want one machine for chemicals and everyday dust together, the HealthMate Plus handles both.
Small Bedrooms and Home Offices: HealthMate Jr or R400
These are the compact versions of each brand's everyday model. The HealthMate Jr is made for small bedrooms, nurseries and home offices, with the same simple three-speed dial as its bigger sibling.
The R400 costs less up front and has an adjustable speed knob instead of fixed settings.
